Clans For and Against the Bonnie Prince
Posted on 6th February 2021
On August 19, 1745, Charles Edward Stuart, the Young Pretender, raised his Standard at Glenfinnan in the Scottish Highlands and declared his intention to restore the Stuart Dynasty and to make Scotland happy. Brandy was then distributed among the 700 or so clansmen who had gathered.
But despite the attendance of clans such as the MacDonald’s and the Cameron’s many were not present and though some would reluctantly join the rebellion later, and others with more enthusiasm, with the Protestant Lowlands unified against him and the Highlands divided there would be more Scots in arms against the Bonnie Prince than for him.
