Catherine Woodville
Posted on 11th January 2021
Catherine was born around 1458, to parents Richard Woodville, 1st Earl Rivers and Jacquetta of Luxembourg.
Following her sister Elizabeth’s marriage to King Edward IV of England, many members of the Woodville family were promoted to high positions at court, and this elevated Catherine’s position; she herself was raised in the Queen’s household.
While still a child, Catherine married Henry Stafford, 2nd Duke of Buckingham becoming Duchess of Buckingham. This marriage went on to produce four prominent children:
Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham
Elizabeth Stafford, Countess of Sussex
Henry Stafford, 1st Earl of Wiltshire
Anne Stafford, Countess of Huntingdon
Following Buckingham’s execution for treason in 1483, Catherine went on to marry twice more.
First to Jasper Tudor in 1485, and following his death in 1495, Catherine married Richard Wingfield.
Catherine Woodville died on 18 May 1497, her burial place is unknown.
