A great philosopher, historian, essayist and author born in 46AD to a prominent family in the small town of Chaeronea, east of Delphi where he lived for most of his life.  
Little is known of his early life, but he was to study mathematics, rhetoric and philosophy at the Academy of Athens under the tutelage of Ammonius in 66AD – 67AD, and he was to represent his home town of Chaeronea on many missions to foreign countries as a young adult. 
 
He is known to have had 2 brothers, Timon and Lamprias, as they are mentioned in his essays. 
 
Plutarch was married to Timoxena; it is not known exactly how many children they had, but at least two sons survived into adulthood, Autobulus and Plutarch, as they are often mentioned in his work, also a daughter, named Timoxena after her mother, who died at the age of two. 
 
Plutarch wrote approximately two hundred and twenty-seven works, as part of this he wrote extensively about Roman leaders and culture. He led an active social and civic life and was known to enjoy the company of Roman Emperors. At some point in his adult life, he took Roman citizenship under the name Lucius Mestrius Plutarchus, although he continued to live in Chaeronea. 
 
He served as magistrate and mayor of Chaeronea and for the last thirty years of his life he served as one of two senior priests of Apollo at the Oracle of Delphi. 
 
Plutarch lived a long and fulfilling life; he was to die around 119AD – 125AD in Delphi.
