Spartan houses were built with dried mud bricks and clay roof tiles.
They were simple farming homes, built over one or two storeys with a central courtyard. They were very basic humble homes with no adornments.

Like many homes in Ancient Greece they were painted white to reflect the heat.

Farms in Sparta were managed by the women, the men lived in barracks; therefore, women held the dominant role in Spartan life.

Sparta, although a city-state, was really a collection of villages surrounded by mountains. This gave it natural protection from invaders..
